Fire Guts School Hostel, Teacher’s Residence In Kapit

SIBU, Aug 13 — Ten students and a teacher managed to escape a fire that gutted a boys’ hostel block and a teacher’s residence at Sekolah Kebangsaan Ulu Yong in Kapit, about 190km from here, late Wednesday night.

Kapit Fire and Rescue Station Chief, Erwandy Tugor today said they received an emergency call at about 11.30 pm before a team of 12 firefighters and two fire-engines were dispatched to the scene about 22km from the station.

“Upon arrival at the scene 30 minutes later, they found the hostel and teacher’s residence completely destroyed and the fire and rescue team took steps to control the blaze from spreading to two other nearby teachers’ residences,” he said when contacted by Bernama here.

He said the fire was extinguished at about 2.40 am and according to information obtained from the school’s headmaster, the fire started from the middle of the hostel block which was a wooden structure similar to the teachers’ residences nearby.

“During the incident, all the students were asleep and were awakened by the school’s security guards.  None of the students or teachers were injured in the fire and further investigations are underway,” he said.
