Penang Clown Struggles For Survival Amid Pandemic

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 10  —  Clad in a clown suit, Yusmanizam Hasan, 34, entertains the public at Penang Chowrasta market here, during one of his stops while selling his homemade “air serbat” for income.

Yusmanizam,  also known as “Yuyu the Clown”, said that his full-time job had been jeopardized by COVID-19 with the enforcement of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

He said that before MCO was enforced, he used to perform in at least five functions a week, providing him an income of between RM3,000 and RM4,000 a week.

“However, since MCO was enforced on March 18, I have only received three assignments to perform…indeed, it is a huge blow for me,” he said when met by Bernama today.

He said it was his wife who came up with the idea of him dressing up as a clown to sell their special blend bottled “air serbat”.

Yusmanizam goes house to house to sell the bottled “air serbat”.

“I have been going around from Teluk Bahang to Balik Pulau in the island selling air serbat, and sometimes to as far as Kepala Batas (in the mainland),” he added.

Yusmanizam said he also promoted his product online and the response had been encouraging.

“The most sales I have made so far was around 285 bottles (of air serbat) in a day,” he said, adding that a bottle of the special blend juice cost RM6 and a packet of two bottles cost RM10.

He looked forward to returning to his full-time job as a clown once MCO is over, but would continue to sell air serbat if there was still a demand for it.

“Being a clown is not just a hobby for me but a career and as long I can see the children are happy with my performance and silly antics, then I am happy as well,” he added.
