Strong Earthquake Hits Banda Sea

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 — An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck Banda Sea at 8.45 am today.

According to a statement from the Malaysian Meteorological Department, the epicentre of the earthquake was 231 kilometres (km) southeast of Ambon in Indonesia at a depth of 186 km.

The quake did not pose a tsunami threat to Malaysia, it said.
