Central Laos Suffers Most Serious Flooding in 42 Years

VIENTIANE, Oct 22  — Prolonged rainfalls have recently left eight districts in Laos’ central province of Savannakhet inundated, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.

It was the worst flooding in the past 42 years in the locality bordering Vietnam’s Quang Tri province.

Since Oct 16, continual rainfalls have raised the water level of Sekong, Xe Banghieng and Sepon rivers, submerging thousands of hectares of rice and vegetables, said the local media quoting Vongsavan Viengmany, Chairman of the Sepon district, as saying.

The level on Selanong hydropower lake in Meuang Phin and Meuang Nong districts also reached alarm level.

According to the Laos Meteorological Centre, downpours could prolong till the next one to two days in many localities.
