Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake Hits Eastern Taiwan

TAIPEI, Nov 6 — An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale shook eastern Taiwan at 9.40 am Friday, Taiwan’s Central News Agency (CNA) reported according to the Central Weather Bureau.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The epicentre of the temblor was located at sea, about 107.8 kilometres northeast of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 29 km, the bureau’s Seismology Centre said.

The earthquake’s highest intensity, which gauges the actual effect of a temblor, was highest in Taitung, Hualien and Changhua counties, where it measured 3 on Taiwan’s 7-tier intensity scale.

The quake also measured an intensity of 2 in Kaohsiung, Taichung and Tainan cities and Nantou, Yilan and Miaoli counties, the bureau said.
