Pneumonia Causes Many Child Deaths Globally, Here Are 13 Symptoms Everyone Should Know

For those who do not know, November 12th of each year is the date for World Pneumonia Day. Did you all know that pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children around the world?

To prevent pneumonia, it can be done by giving a pneumococcal vaccine. As additional information, here are 13 types of pneumonia symptoms namely:

  • very fast breathing (in some cases, this is the only symptom)
  • breathing with grunting or wheezing sounds
  • working hard to breathe; this can include flaring of the nostrils, belly breathing, or movement of the muscles between the ribs
  • fever
  • cough
  • stuffy nose
  • shaking chills
  • vomiting
  • chest pain
  • belly pain (because a child is coughing and working hard to breathe)
  • less activity
  • loss of appetite (in older kids) or poor feeding (in infants), which may lead to dehydration
  • in extreme cases, bluish or gray color of the lips and fingernails

In conjunction with World Pneumonia Day, the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH) recently through a post on Facebook stated that the government will allocate RM90 million specifically for pneumococcal immunization programs to children in the 2021 Budget.

It is hoped that in this way, pneumonia that causes many deaths among Malaysian children can be prevented.

“Every breath is counted, stop pneumonia now,” MOH said in the post.
