A rare pink diamond was sold for $26.6 million at a leading auction event run by an auction company, Sotheby’s. The selling price of the diamond, dubbed ‘The Spirit of the Rose’, which weighs 14.83 carats, has set a new world record for pink and purple diamonds.
It only takes a few minutes to reach 21 million Swiss francs. But the identity of the buyer who eventually managed to own the diamond is kept secret.
The diamond was formed from a 27.85 carat stone found at a diamond mine owned by the Alrosa firm in the Sakha Republic in northeastern Siberia, Russia, in 2017.
The work of cutting the diamond took almost a year to maintain its original pink color. Pink diamonds are very hard to find and are in high demand in the global market.
Five of the 10 most expensive diamonds ever sold are pink diamonds, according to Sotheby’s.
Previously, the record for the most expensive pink diamond ever sold was CTF Star Pink which sold for $ 71.2 million at an auction event in Hong Kong, in 2017.
