Teenager Awakens From Coma After His Brother Says ‘Chicken Fillet’

A teenager woke up in a coma when he heard his brother mention his favorite food, chicken fillet. The bizarre incident took place in Taiwan when the victim, 18-year-old Chiu, from Hsinchu County was in a coma for 62 days after a motorcycle accident last July.

Chiu was rushed to hospital and doctors said his internal organs were damaged and surgery needed to be performed. However, Chiu was in a coma after undergoing the surgery.

Director of Intensive Care Unit at Ton Yen General Hospital, Hsieh Tsung-Hsin said, the victim’s right liver and kidney were badly damaged including other organs.

Chiu underwent six surgeries, namely a laparotomy, craniotomy, splenectomy, liver repair, right kidney nephrectomy, right clavicle, and right femur open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).

The doctor then tries his best to get Chiu out of the coma but it depends on the victim’s strength to regain consciousness.

A nurse at the hospital said Chiu had been in a coma for more than two months and on the 62nd day, Chiu’s brother who was next to his bed chatted and joked with him.

“Brother, I’m going to eat you your favorite chicken fillet,” said Chiu’s brother.

Unexpectedly, Chiu’s pulse began to peak and he miraculously regained consciousness and his vital signs began to stabilize.

Now, Chiu has fully recovered. He recently visited the hospital staff and brought a cake to thank them.
