MCMC Warns, Be Cautious When Using Online Dating Apps

Recently, a post about the statistics on users of an online dating site ranking the high numbers of university students using that site has gone viral.

This puts MCMC on high alert. Although it was claimed to be a publicity stunt by the company, it does puts the question on their integrity and security of their users’ data. Aside from this website, there are others that offer dating services as well.

MCMC advised everyone to be careful in using such apps or websites as their information could easily be compromised by a third party. Furthermore, internet users are more vulnerable to malware and spyware threats as well as the leaking of personal information and sexual harassment.

“MCMC is concerned about the recent marketing gimmick by dating site Sugarbook which claimed that many Malaysian women, especially university students have offered themselves as ‘Sugar Baby’ on the application.

“Such claims should be investigated because the user profiles could be manipulated to deceive victims,” said the statement.

MCMC also stated that they along with PDRM will investigate this matter if the platform has violated any terms and misuse of personal information. Everyone is advised to always practice good netiquette and for parents to supervise their children’s internet usage as well as any change in lifestyle.

“Users should be aware that they are exposed to cyberattack risks if they do not take necessary cybersecurity and self-control measures.

“The risk of love scams will increase if they are exposed to malware and spyware as well as personal data leakage and sexual harassment,” it added.
