The Interesting Things About Oval Community Gardens of Copenhagen

There are many urban spaces where architects boost their creativity and make the land their canvas. The people living there are testaments to a person’s creativity and just how design could mean more than just visual style.

This suburban district in Copenhagen has one of the most visually appealing gardens in the world. Unlike others, this one is oval in shape. Architecture enthusiasts might recognize the name Carl Theodor Marius Sørensen and the oval gardens of Naerum are one of his famous projects.

In 1948, he designed 40 oval allotment gardens each measuring 25 x 15 m, laid out on rolling lawns between public housing and more traditional allotments. Owners positioned their cottages freely but within Sørensen’s guide. As a result, the gardens are one of the most beautiful Danish attractions even after 70 years.

The seemingly chaotic design contains its purpose and has managed to retain consistency in some ways. The owners have a preference for clipped hedges over uncut hedges, which helped retain their charm.

Aerial views of the garden produce spectacular images. Those with drones should take this advantage for a good shot. It is also great to walk in and that is the beauty of Sørensen’s plan.

His design is to encourage people to walk more and get some fresh air and exercise. With everyone using transportation and social media being a main communicative medium, it is a good way to make people exercise more amongst the beautiful view as well as socializing with neighbors more.
