Movie Review: Really Disturbing Yet Satisfying Jump Scare Movie of ‘Pet Sematary’

Pet Sematary is a 2019 American supernatural horror film directed by Kevin Kölsch and also Dennis Widmyer. It is written by Jeff Buhler, from a screen story by Matt Greenberg. It is the second adaptation of the 1983 novel of the same name by Stephen King, after the 1989 film. The film stars Jason Clarke, Amy Seimetz, and John Lithgow. This movie, follows a family that discovers a mysterious graveyard in the woods behind their new home.

It follows Dr. Louis Creed who after relocating with his wife Rachel and their two young children from Boston to rural Maine, discovers a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his unusual neighbor, Jud Crandall that would set off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unfathomable evil with horrific consequences.

What ‘Pet Sematary’ Is About

‘Pet Sematary’ begins with the Creed family with the husband Louis, wife Rachel, eight-year-old daughter Ellie, two-year-old son Gage, and beloved house cat Church. They arrive in the quaint rural town of Ludlow, Maine to move into a charmingly rustic home with plenty of curb appeal. Before long, Church gets killed by a truck and when Louis despairs of how to break the news to Ellie, next-door-neighbor Jud offers to help Louis bury him. After being assured that Ellie really and truly loved him, he takes Louis far beyond the pet cemetery to another area of the woods and has him bury Church there instead.

The next day, Church returns. It turns out that this burial ground has the power to bring the dead back, though they are not the same as they once were. Following an even greater tragedy, a grieving Louis will choose to take advantage of the burial ground once again in the belief that things will surely work out better this time around. It all goes bad as Louis’ well-meaning attempt to cheat death quickly devolves into a Grand Guignol-style procession of flashing knives, spurting blood, and sliced hamstrings.

What Can Be Said About ‘Pet Sematary’

A blood-curdling chiller that adds new twists to King’s novel yet stays incredibly faithful to its dark spirit. Smartphones and other products of the digital age have been added, but the plot trots along the same surface.

This movie hobbled by some cheesy special effects, crude misdirection, and frustratingly undeveloped ideas. But the movie honors King by raising fresh hell for a new generation. It will make you jump out of your seat, but what matters are the provocations you take home and can’t shake. That’s the stuff of nightmares.
