Movie Review: ‘Superman & Lois’, A New Perspective On A Hero

The new CW addition to Arrowverse, Superman & Lois was released a few weeks ago and fans were intrigued. This new version of the Superman story goes into a territory that no live-action version of the caped hero ever went.

This Superman made brief appearances in CW’s Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, Batwoman, and Legends of Tomorrow. Tyler Hoechlin did an unexpectedly wonderful job as the iconic savior. Reprising the role in his own series is a nice change.

The Story

In Superman & Lois, Clark Kent is married to Lois Lane and this is about their lives together raising their twin sons in Smallville.

For fans of Warner Bros’ Smallville, it will be nice to see Clark Kent back in his hometown along with his own family in tow. As the main theme about Superman is what does it means to be human, the story will focus more on Clark’s life as a father raising his boys with different personalities. This shows a more humane and vulnerable side to the Kryptonian hero. Besides, Clark will be teaming up with his father-in-law in trying to save the world.

Elizabeth Tulloch is excellent as Lois. They both have great chemistry and show the real struggle of parents raising their children and juggling secrets that would tear them apart.

The Style

One of the reasons the series stood out so much is how beautiful it looks in comparison with other tv series. The movie-like camerawork and coloring reminisce of Snyder’s Man of Steel. However, the story and dialogues feel more mature and a lot less melodramatic.

CW is famous for its overdramatic style that becomes stale over time. Seeing this action-packed drama with a light-hearted slice-of-life story of Superman and his family really brings back the nostalgia of watching Smallville back in early 2000.

The Characters

Jordan Elsass and Alex Garfin plays the twin brothers Jonathan and Jordan Kent. Jordan is suffering from anxiety disorder. Despite his troubles, he is an intelligent child and loved by everyone. Jonathan as the more popular and supportive brother who always got his twin’s back.

Other characters include Lana and her husband Kyle Cushing. Jordan also gets a love interest in the form of Lana’s daughter, Sarah. Captain Luthor as the villain of the show is a parallel Earth’s version of Lex Luthor.

There are five episodes in total and three have been aired so far. Good news for the fans, the makers have confirmed for the series to be renewed for a second season.
