Book Review: ‘Yesterday, I Was The Moon’ – A Poetry of Self-Discovery For National Poetry Month

April is the month where National Poetry Month. It means 30 days of celebrating the joy, expressiveness, and pure delight of poetry. Introduced in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets This is a month to increase people’s awareness of the art form of poetry.

In recent years a new trend of poetry has emerged called insta-poetry. They might not be able to match the quality of actual poetry but it provided a good starting point for those interested.

A poetry collection by Unnahar Noor called Yesterday I Was The Moon is a good example of this. This book is not only a book of Noor’s work but also the story of the author’s life. Through the lens of culture, language, loss, love, and identity most of us can relate to Noor.

The author was born in Karachi, Pakistan. And with Urdu as her mother tongue, she can write in poetic verse good enough even for an insta-poetry. You can certainly sense her attempt at poetic language and her raw emotions through her experiences. In this format, she can reach out to her demographic audience and more people could feel what she felt. Her poems felt refreshing while maintaining the themes that she builds.

Words are not the only thing Noor has to offer. The book also contains cute illustrations that are symbolic of the poem it accompanies. For aesthetic lovers, the images are a fascinating mix of visual art and poetry and they complement each other well. Yesterday I Was The Moon is definitely for those who enjoy light poetry and are open to experiencing life through other people’s lenses. For updates on her works and aesthetic-filled ideas, you may check out her Instagram.
