Louis Vuitton Is ‘Flying High’ With Its Latest Airplane-Shaped Bag

Louis Vuitton’s menswear artistic director, Virgil Abloh, designed an interesting bag as part of this year’s men’s collection. An airplane-shaped handbag designed by Abloh recently went viral for not just its peculiar shape but for its cost. The price is allegedly (and ironically) more expensive than a used, single-engine airplane.

The designer has always gained mixed criticism over his over-the-top creations. Unveiled in January, LV’s Fall/Winter 2021 men’s collection featured a variety of his ideas, including clothes inspired by famous architecture and popular landmarks. With wings, tail, and even four engines embossed with LV’s iconic monogram, the bag comes with a price tag of $39,000 (RM161,226).

The photos of the bags have been circulating on social media for months. It’s only recently gone viral on Twitter after one user, Valeska compared its price to that of an actual airplane. He attached a clipping of an online ad for a used Cessna single-engine airplane selling for just $32,300 (RM133,528) on eBay.

“You can buy an actual plane for less,” Twitter user Valeska wrote.

“And have enough money left over for an LV paint job,” someone else commented.

Described as a ‘Keepall’ bag, it’s unclear whether Louis Vuitton’s Keepall handbag is just a fashion statement, or if it has practicality. And the designer himself did not offer any other information. The airplane motifs seen in many of Abloh’s collection was inspired by the ‘tourist vs. purist’ archetypes.

“It’s my organizing principle for my point of view when I make things,” Abloh told Vogue in January. “A tourist is someone who’s eager to learn, who wants to see the Eiffel Tower when they come to Paris. The purist is the person who knows everything about everything.”

As a person who not know much about fashion, I can only tell when someone is being fashionable vs. pretentious.
