MAQIS Seizes 1.4 Tonnes Of Fresh Fish In Padang Besar

KANGAR, April 9  — The Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Department (MAQIS) in Perlis has seized 1.4 tonnes of fresh fish estimated to be worth RM5,600 as the import permit was confusing.

Perlis MAQIS director Mohamad Arshad Raffin said the seizure was made following an inspection on a lorry carrying various types of fish at the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex in Padang Besar last Monday.

“Following the inspection, we found 1,400 kg (1.4 tonnes) of fresh fish that was declared on MAQIS permit but the document was confusing,” he said in a statement today.

He said importing agricultural products using a fake, inaccurate and confusing document is an offence under Section 13 of the Malaysian Quarantine and Inspection Services Act 2011.

If found guilty, offenders shall be liable to a maximum fine of RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to two years or both.
