The Journey of ‘Takimika’, Japan 90-Year-Old Fitness Instructor

A full-time housewife, Takishima Mika or known as ‘Takimika‘ had never exercised before in her 65 years of living. It was a comment thrown away by her husband that pushed Takimika to start going to the gym where she immediately caught the fitness bug. In the following five years, she had lost about 15 kilograms altogether.

“In those days I was more than just a little plump—my trouser size was twice what it is now. And yet, I stubbornly refused to admit that I was overweight. One day, however, my husband made a comment about my weight, and that was when I decided to join a gym,” says Takimika.

This now 90-year-old woman achieved her target of losing weight but she continued training, wanted to tone her core. Back then, she wouldn’t have guessed that her trainer would change her life, 8 years later.

Takishima’s trainer, Nakasawa Tomoharu, made Takimika an instructor. Nakawasa is also the owner of Power Aging, the gym where she trains.

“Every inch of Takishima’s body exudes a love of training. She’s a great speaker too. The more I worked with her, the more I felt that it was a waste to have her come here only as a pupil, which is why I half forced her to take the role of the fitness instructor. Takishima resisted initially, but her achievements have exceeded our expectations,” Nakasawa recalls.

Due to the pandemic caused by the coronavirus, Takimika’s schedule is currently limited to only one 60-minute online class per month. Her daily schedule, on the other hand, is a busy one. She would exercise every day and eat hearty meals.

Takimika’s life definitely embodies her philosophy that age is only a number. Her youthful look confirms her advice and healthy lifestyle. Takishima started exercising at 65 and eventually a fitness instructor at 87. You are never too old to start anything, she says.
