Three More Para Athletes Qualify For Tokyo

KUALA LUMPUR, June 9 –Three more national paralympic athletes have made it to the Tokyo Paralympic Games which is scheduled to take place from Aug 24 to Sept 5.

The National Sports Council via a post on Facebook and Twitter today informed that para badminton ace Cheah Like Hou has confirmed his ticket to Tokyo when he qualified on merit based on his latest ranking.

The six-time world champion who will compete in the SU5 (upper limb disability) category qualified after the end of the qualifying period, which saw him ranked second in the world.

Another para badminton player, Didin Taresoh also followed in Cheah’s footsteps when he managed to book a slot to Tokyo and will compete in the SS6 (dwarf) category.

Didin qualified on merit after the end of the qualifying period following being ranked seventh in the world.

Meanwhile, wheelchair tennis player Abu Samah Borhan also confirmed his ticket to the Paralympic Games on merit.

Ranked 40th in the world, he managed to collect 608 points in nine of the top he participated in before.

For the record, Abu Samah participated in the Rio Paralympics in Brazil in 2016 but was eliminated in the first round.

Before this, 10 para athletes from five sports had qualified for the Tokyo Paralympics namely Muhd ​​Nursaiful Zulfikri and Brenda Anelia in the swimming; S. Suresh and Wiro Julin (archery); Mohd Ziyad Zolkefli, Wong Kar Gee, Mohamad Ridzuan Mohamad Puzi and Abdul Latif Romli (athletics); Chew Wei Lun (boccia) and Bonnie Bunyau Gustin (powerlifting).

Meanwhile, the success of the three athletes attracted the attention of Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican.

Through a post on his Facebook page, Reezal Merican congratulated the three of them and described the success as another good news for the country’s sports.
