Food Review: Background Story of How ‘Musang King’ Durian Got Its Name

‘Musang King’ Durian is the most popular durian breed from Malaysia, rendered in Chinese as ‘Mao Shan Wang’ which is usually the priciest of all cultivars. The origin of the name ‘Musang King’ dates back to the 80s, when a man named Tan Lai Fook from Raub, Pahang stumbled upon a durian tree in Gua Musang, Kelantan. He brought the tree branch back to Raub for grafting, and this new breed attracted other cultivators.

The cultivar was named after Gua Musang, its place of origin. The fruit shape is oval to ellipsoid and has a light green husk. ‘Musang King’ is known for its bright yellow flesh and is like a more potent or enhanced version of the D24. It has its own sticky and creamy also texture. Other than that, it also has a sweet and bitter taste to it.

There are also many other durian varieties like the Black Pearl (Hei Zhen Zhu), Red Prawn (Hong Xia), Black Thorn and Black Gold durian but nothing triumphs like the ‘Musang King’. The fruit balances just the right profile of bitterness and sweetness, which is why Asia is so passionate about this heavenly variety.

People can also find ‘Musang King’ desserts, like burnt cheesecake, mochi, puree on top of gula melaka kueh salat desserts, lava croissant, soft serve and so many more. Altogether, ‘Musang King’, the durian that came from the mountains with civet cats, is the victorious king of the king of fruits.
