Sailing around the world isn’t an easy thing and that too sailing solo. However, one man manages to make what is impossible possible. Born in February 1958, Dato’ Azhar Mansor made history as the first Malaysian to set a record for sailing around the world solo without the help of engine power.
He started his journey on 2nd February 1999. He then returned to Malaysia on 11th August 1999, arriving safely at Awana Porto Malai Resort, Langkawi and was hailed as a national hero by Malaysians led by Malaysia’s Prime Minister at that time that is Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.
His trip in sailing the ship Jalur Gemilang around the world took about 190 days. Initially, his target was only 100 days but he had problems with a broken mast while in Cape Horn, South America and thus only managed to complete his journey in 190 days.
The perseverance displayed by Dato’Azhar at that time became a prime example for the New Malaysia Spirit. The yatch, Jalur Gemilang, used by Dato’Azhar cost about RM2 million. During his journey, Dato’Azhar managed to cover 21,600 nautical miles.
Dato’ Azhar also received Performance Certificate from WSSR (World Speed Sailing Record Council) for Round the World, assisted, (stops,) eastabout, single-handed.

Till today, this is considered an achievement that has made Malaysia and its citizens proud. Let’s hope that many more Malaysians would achieve great things and make our country proud.
