None of us can escape from overthinking. One way or another, we tend to overthink certain situations, answers, or information. At times, being an overthinker doesn’t really sound that bad because you can thoroughly think your way through circumstances. However, it can cause you a lot of problems if you’re not careful enough.
Usually, people who overthink shift their focus to negative thoughts. Without realization, dealing with overthinking might becomes difficult.
There are 7 simple steps on how to avoid overthinking :
1) Be Aware
Before dealing with your habit of overthinking, first, you must be aware of when it is happening. Whenever you feel anxious or stressed, step out of that circle and see how you are responding to that situation. During that moment of realization, you can then focus better on your decision to make a change.
2) Distract yourself into happiness
I would say that it is the best thing you could do to avoid overthinking. It’s like finding yourself again through things that make you forget your problems. For example, you go for a hike, dance class, watching sunsets, meditation, painting, and more. Do things that give you happiness because in the end of the day it is all about you.
3) Be grateful
Appreciation is an important aspect that most of us lacking in our lives. We are not grateful for what we have and all we want is. For example, you desperately want a job as your friends because it looks more fun compared to yours and you start overthinking that you might end being in one place doing the same job. This can lead you to less focus on work and lose what you are already having. Showing gratitude towards the things you already have in your life will take you a long way and will bring more blessings into your life.
4) Change your perspective
Don’t think of what can go wrong, but think of what can go right. Some people go through extreme overthinking and it leads them to live a life with fear. They won’t have confidence because would be too afraid that something might happen. As a result, it causes them to lose so many things. By changing your perspective, it will take you to see things or situation differently. Sometimes, something good can come out of the bad.
5) Don’t wait for perfection
Most people wait for the perfect time or perfect day to make progress. If you’re one of them, its time to stop right now. Being ambitious is different from being perfect because focusing on perfection is unrealistic and impractical. The minute you start thinking things need to be perfect, is the minute you need to remind yourself that waiting for perfection is not as smart as making progress.
6) Set a timer
Give yourself some time. Set a timer for about 5 minutes and allow yourself to think, analyze and evaluate your thoughts. Once the timer goes off, grab a piece of paper and write down whatever that is worrying you, giving you stress, and causing you to be anxious. Take about 10 minutes to do this and once done, get rid of the paper and go do something fun. This is like a breakthrough method to help you overcome overthinking.
7) Accept your best
Sometimes overthinking results from fear that one is not good enough, smart enough, or dedicated enough. No matter what it may be, after giving your best shot at something, just accept that you’ve given your very best. You can’t control success but just be happy that you’ve done what you could.
