Using Misleading, Vague Or Fancy Number Plates Is An Offense -JPJ

Malaysian number plates on any vehicle are usually displayed at the front and also rear of all private and commercial motorized vehicles in Malaysia, as required by law. The issuing of the number plates is regulated and administered by the Malaysian Road Transport Department. All standards for number plate designs have been defined by them.

Character size, layouts, and color use are more strictly enforced for accurate identification and optimum visibility. However, the dimensions of the plates displaying the license number are more loosely enforced. While many vehicles display number plates in regulation dimensions or are housed in dealer plate frames with standardized dimensions, some number plates are outlined to precisely fit into vastly larger recessed spaces holding the rear license plates.

Little did many people here in Malaysia know, there are actually certain illegal types of number plates that they should have been aware of. They should never have their number plates custom designed like certain designs because that could lead the owner to get fined in the amount of not less than RM300 and not more than RM3,000.

In the Facebook post that stated, “The public is advised to abide by the rules for installing vehicle registration numbers according to the specifications set under the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987″. If the specifications are not followed, the owner of the vehicle will be taken to investigation with the JPJ. The public is also advised to report any vehicle that has misleading, vague, or even fancy number plates along with vehicle photos and other relevant details.
