A ‘sijil nikah’ or marriage certificate is actually an official printed statement that proves two people are legally married. In most jurisdictions, a marriage certificate is indeed issued by a government official only after the civil registration of the particular marriage. Beneficial for getting a passport, visa, work permit, and others if their spouse lives abroad. It is also beneficial in availing life insurance benefits, family pension, bank deposits, and many more.

During the flood situation that occurs in our country Malaysia recently, many people that became the flood victims have lost a lot of their important documents being carried away by the floodwater. One of them might be the very important ‘sijil nikah’ for married couples. Those who might not know, there are ways that can be done to get it back.

Ways to apply back your ‘sijil nikah’ that got lost during the flood:

  1. You can apply it at the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (JAWI).
  2. Complete the ‘Apply Form’ at the ‘Marriage Department’ counter.
  3. Include a copy of the ‘Identification Card’ and ‘Akuan Sumpah’ letter from the Muslim Commissioner for Oaths with your application form.
  4. Submit the completed document to the ‘Marriage Department’ counter.
  5. The certificate could be retrieved after 14 working days.
