PUTRAJAYA, Feb 18 — Utilising recycled materials, two siblings have illustrated a story of a woman’s suffering and fight against the COVID-19 virus in the intensive care unit (ICU) on a piece of canvas.
Aqilah Syakirah Yusri, 18, and her sister Alisya Syuhaidah, 16, use scrap metal, plastic, bottles, fabrics from recycled materials such as computer mouse, plastic cake moulds, fans and boxes to produce a work of art entitled, ‘Strongest Women – COVID-19 is true! Never give up and keep strong’.
Aqilah Syakirah said the work was inspired by the story of their aunt who was infected with COVID-19 and battled the disease in the ICU of Ampang Hospital last year but died later.
“We got the idea from her to show how tough it is for women infected with COVID-19 to struggle to survive and recover,” she told Bernama.
Aqilah Syakirah said their work carries the message that every person infected with COVID-19 still has hope of recovery despite being in the ICU by displaying the strength of a woman who fought against COVID-19.
The work of the two students of Kolej Vokasional Dato’ Lela Maharaja, Rembau, Negeri Sembilan was part of the ‘Waste to Art Competition 2021’ exhibition organised by the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) recently.
Aqilah Syakirah said it took them two weeks to produce their piece using recycled materials.
“While the materials are easy to source we burnt the midnight oil to complete the work. We did it after our classes and together we thought of ways to produce a work that could move the soul,” she said.
Alisya Syuhaidah said they both chose to illustrate the condition of a woman using a respirator specifically to show the threat of COVID-19 was real.
“The clock is to demonstrate that every second spent in the ICU is valuable for the woman to recover from COVID-19 infection,” she said.
Alisya Syuhaidah hopes that the work produced can raise awareness to all parties to continue to comply with standard operating procedures (SOP) to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
