Keretapi Sarong returns for the 4th time on 16 September. For the past 2 years, the Sarong movement was held virtually due to the pandemic.
However this year, people will be able to join this event physically during Malaysia Day. So what are you waiting for? Grab your ‘sarongs’ and head over to the designations below to celebrate Malaysia Day in a special way.
The story of Keretapi Sarong
Keretapi Sarong is currently organized by LOCCO. It initially began in 2012 and was first handled by Random Alphabet. They halted the event in 2016 and later passed it on to LOCCO. In 2017, LOCCO brought the event back and this year will be the 4th time LOCCO will be organizing this event physically.
The first iteration of Keretapi Sarong in 2012 had around 100people attending it. However, the movement drew the attention of Malaysians and the last physical event in 2019 had around 5000 people from different walks of life joining the event.
The idea of Keretapi Sarong is to create a flash mob of people wearing ‘sarongs’ as a way to uphold the Malaysian identity and as a way to celebrate Malaysia Day
Keretapi Sarong on 16 September
LOCCO uses ‘sarongs’ as a symbol of national unity and to create awareness of Malaysia’s’ sarong’ and the story behind it. Malaysians attending the event would wear ‘sarongs and gather at designated stations stated by LOCCO. These locations are:
- MRT Kajang
- LRT Gombak
- LRT Subang
- MRT Bandar Utama
- LRT Ampang
After attendees gather at these designated stations, LOCCO will give a secret location where all of the people will have to head to. The train will depart at 9 A.M. so if you are planning to go, make sure you come early and be there before the train heads off to the final location.
Cosplayers are also welcome to come! Wear your favorite costumes but don’t forget to wear a ‘sarong’ with your costume. Prizes await for the best cosplay with ‘sarong’.
Several activities will be held at the secret location including folk singing, traditional dancing, traditional games, and many more.

- Showcasing the diverse Malaysian culture
- Encouraging the use of public transport
