Arsenal defender, Pablo Mari was amongst the injured in a stabbing attack taking place in a Carrefour supermarket in Assago.
The defender is currently hospitalized. The attack injured at least 4 others and one person died.
Mari was shopping with his wife and son when he was stabbed in the back. Monza CEO Adriano Galliani said to Sky Italy that “He had his son in a trolley and his wife next to him. He didn’t notice anything. He then felt something painful in his back, which was the criminal’s knife.”
Several customers detained the 46-year-old attacker before handing him off to the police. Police say there was no terrorist motive and that the man had mental health issues.
Arsenal has released a statement stating that Mari is not seriously hurt.
“We are all shocked to hear the dreadful news about the stabbing in Italy, which has put a number of people in hospital including our on-loan centre-back Pablo Mari,” the statement said.
“Our thoughts are with Pablo and the other victims of this dreadful incident”.
Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta also gave his thoughts on the situation after their 2-0 defeat to PSV Eindhoven.
“I just found out — I know [Arsenal technical director] Edu’s been in touch with his relatives,” he said.
“He’s in hospital and seems to be OK, but I’ll have a briefing now about the situation and what happened. We’ll be in touch with him, and hopefully he’s OK.”
Mari is currently on-loan at Monza from Arsenal. He joined Arsenal back in 2020 from Flamengo.
