Voting is the responsibility of anyone who lives in a democratic nation. However, many concerns arise about voting— especially when you’re not in your homeland during the general election.
For the upcoming general election, Malaysians are encouraged to cast their votes no matter where they are. But what about Malaysians that live overseas? Can they vote despite not being here?
Well, the answer is yes! Calling out all overseas Malaysians to cast your votes via postal voter online!
Malaysians aged 18 and above can now vote
Undi18 is under the constitutional amendments that allow all Malaysians aged 18 and above living overseas to vote by post.
Before, voting by post was only applicable to military personnel, government servants and full-time students living overseas.
Thankfully, from 15 December 2021, the minimum age for voting was lowered to 18. Any Malaysian living abroad could register as a voter for the upcoming elections.
How to vote?
Follow these simple steps to register for postal voting:
- You have to register for a MySPR account to apply for postal voting
- Visit the MySPR website and click on ‘Permohonan Baru‘.
- Submit these details to register:
- Your full name and address according to your MyKad
- A valid mobile phone number
- A valid email address
- A front image of your MyKad
- A selfie with your MyKad
- Your MySPR account takes around one to two days to approve.
- Once approved:
- Log into your MySPR account
- Click on the ‘Permohonan‘ under the ‘Undi Pos‘ side menu

- In the form, select ‘Pengundi Luar Negara‘ as your category
- Enter your passport number and other relevant details
- Fill in the mailing address where you want your voting paper to be sent
- Wait for a notification from MySPR and check your email verifying your vote
- Finally, you can check your postal voting status at MySPR Semak
The EC will send you an email if your voting application is successful
- An account on Twitter, BERSIH, clarifies that the posting paper will be posted by the EC to your email when the general elections happen.
- Then, you have to mark the paper, fill in a form and insert the ballot back into an envelope.
- Post your marked voting paper by the courier service near you.
Malaysians staying overseas can also fulfill their responsibility by casting their vote online.
