Must-Know Tips On Getting Ready For Flood Season

As the rainy season is here, there will come along the flood season. Therefore, everyone, especially those at a high risk of being a flood victim, must take safety measures. 

This season brings only consequences to people. Some people will lose a place to call home. Worse, some people lose their loved ones. With the tips shared by Jabatan Penerangan Malaysia, we can look after each other.

Safety measures during the flood season should be taken before and during the flood.

Before the flood

1) Ensure the area has a forecasting and warning system to alert the public about the flood

2) Get the information about

  • The current flooding area
  • The evacuation centre and the disaster relief centre

3) Do check

  • If the drainage or water supplies are clogged
  • The sewage system

4) Save and place clean water in a high place

5) Turn off the electricity, water source, and gas

6) Bring the outside items into the house

7) Place any electrical devices in a high place

8) Put the important documents in a waterproof container (bring the documents if you were to evacuate)

During the flood

1) Get the current information about the flood

2) Seek a higher place to stay

  • Far from the open space, the river, and drains

3) Always have a first aid kit with you

4) Always be prepared if you are directed to evacuate from your respective place

5) Make sure the children

  • Do not play in the floodwater
  • Are not near the river or drains

Avoid walking in the floodwater, touching any wires, drinking floodwater, and driving in the floodwater.

If you are asked to evacuate, do it instantly

  • Before the situation worsens
  • In a daytime for safety
  • Follow the route which is directed by the authorities.

While preparing for the flood, make sure to follow the rules of the authorities as well. Moreover, these tips might save your life and your loved ones.
