University of Nottingham Appointed Malaysian Doctor As The First Professor of Diabetes

The University Of Nottingham appointed Prof. Dr. Iskandar Idris, 52, as its first Professor Of Diabetes And Metabolic Medicine. His early education began at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Petaling Jaya. Then, he continued with his study at Victorian Institute, Kuala Lumpur.

Not long after that, he pursued medicine at the University Of Nottingham. He graduated as a doctor in 1994. After that, he went through medical training and completed his specialist training. It was in 2004.

On being appointed as the first Professor Of Diabetes, Dr. Iskandar said he did not expect it. Nevertheless, his journey of studying for years has earned him recognition internationally. He also makes Malaysia proud!

Thankful for his family

This Penang-born doctor showed gratitude to his father, wife, and three children for always supporting him.

“My father is my biggest supporter and he has given me encouragement and inspiration to pursue this field. He also motivated my children to study hard and gain more knowledge.” Dr. Iskandar is grateful for his father, the former Deputy Minister of Federal Territory, Tan Sri Idris Abdul Rauf.

Besides that, he is also thankful for his wife, who shares the same interest as him. Hayley Hobs Iskandar, 48, is in the medical field and is very supportive of Dr. Iskandar’s passion.

His success had taken 50 percent of his time to conduct some studies and research. The other half of his time was used on routine clinical practice. Like any other student, Dr. Iskandar was also confronted with challenges while doing research. Financial constraints, funding problems, and other responsibilities were some of the issues he had to overcome.

Dr. Iskandar’s thoughts on diabetes

Diabetes is deadly and has increased in number all around the country. Due to this reason, Dr. Iskandar decided to study this specialization. He added that this specialization involves endocrinology. Endocrinology is the study of endocrine glands and hormone secretion, which links to other diseases.

Discussing diabetes in Malaysia, Dr. Iskandar pointed the high cost of treatment constrains patients to receive treatment. He mentioned daily diet, lifestyle, and lack of exercise are some of the causes of diabetes. Therefore, Dr. Iskandar hoped everyone could take prevention by practicing a healthy lifestyle. Besides that, controlling food consumption is crucial to avoid the disease.

He wished everyone to get check-ups for their eyesight, heart, and kidney as the first step to prevent diabetes.
