You Wanna Be Election Candidate? These Are Some Things You Need To Know

Some people might have been thinking to be an election candidate. This upcoming election is definitely something huge and also important for Malaysia. For those who might not know about it, our country will be holding the 15th General Election (GE) soon.

If you are one of those people, there are definitely certain things that you need to know. It is actually not that easy for anyone to just simply become an election candidate. Even though you have to go through several stages, it is surely possible for everyone.

Categories To Choose From For Election Candidate

  • Member Of Parliament: Need to be nominated and won the parliamentary election.
  • Member Of The State Assembly: Need to be nominated and won the state assembly election.

Eligibility Requirements To Be Election Candidate

  • House of Representatives (Dewan Rakyat)
    • Firstly, you must be a citizen Of Malaysia
    • Next, to be a resident of the Federation (Article 47 of the Federal Constitution)
    • Lastly, your age is not less than 18 years old on nomination day
  • State Assembly Elections

    • Firstly, you must be a citizen Of Malaysia
    • Next, to be a residency in the contesting state
    • Lastly, the age is not less than 21 years old/ 18 years old on nomination day (based on the provisions of each state)

Things That Can Make The Election Candidate Disqualified

  • Known or even confirmed as a person of unsound mind.

  • After that, if you have an unsolved bankruptcy.

  • Hold an ‘earning position’.

  • Failed to submit election expenditure statement.

  • Convicted of an offense by a court in the Federation (or before Malaysia Day in the areas of Sabah/Sarawak/Singapore).

    • Sentenced to a minimum of one year in prison

    • A minimum fine of RM2,000

    • Haven’t received forgiveness yet

  • Obtain citizenship/ use citizenship rights/ make a declaration of allegiance to a foreign country.

Deposit

  • Parliamentary Election: RM10,000

  • State Assembly Election: RM5,000

Places Election Candidates Are Allowed To Visit On Voting Day

  • The first place is the Voting place/ Counting place.
  • Secondly is the Centralized and clustered vote-counting centers.
  • After that would be the Center for the production, opening, and counting of postal ballots.
  • Last but not least is the Official vote tallying center.
