About Kopi Kenangan (Also Known As Kenangan Coffee In Malaysia)
We are a tech-enabled coffee chain and the fastest-growing New Retail F&B chain in Indonesia. We were founded by Edward Tirtanata, James Prananto, and Cynthia Chaerunnisa in 2017. The idea of Kopi Kenangan began with our shared desire to spread a passion for Indonesian coffee locally and eventually to the rest of the world. We saw a huge gap in the Indonesian coffee retail market in 2017 between big international coffee chains that sell coffee for IDR40,000 to IDR50,000 (which is equivalent to RM12 to RM15) per cup and instant coffee, as the alternative option for enjoying coffee.
Our disruptive business model, the grab-and-go coffee model, allows customers to order their favorite beverages on mobile apps and pick them up at our stores or deliver them to their doorsteps via our food delivery partners. We serve high-quality coffee drinks by using top-of-the-line coffee machines and high-grade raw materials. In order to maintain the consistency and quality of our products and services, we own and control all Kopi Kenangan stores.
As a testament to our emphasis on quality, we appointed Mikael Jasin as Head of Coffee to oversee our product development, which includes procuring the best quality local coffee beans for us. Mikael has deep knowledge and many years of experience under his belt and is the winner of the Indonesia Barista Championship 2019 & 2020. He joined the World Barista Championship Boston 2019 and was placed 4th. Currently, he is the World’s 7th Best Barista (2021) and we are so proud to have him with us. We strive to make high-quality coffee accessible to everyone by serving well-crafted products that combine local Asian tastes with the global palate. Our mission is to be the most-loved consumer brand in Southeast Asia. As part of our five-year vision, we are committed to expanding our footprint and becoming the largest F&B chain in Southeast Asia.
Kopi Kenangan: Southeast Asia’s First Retail F&B Unicorn
We were founded in 2017 and within 1 year, we began to attract the attention of foreign investors and started to participate in expanding the Kopi Kenangan business within and beyond Indonesia.
In 2021, through our series C funding round, our valuation was boosted to more than USD 1 billion, making us the first New Retail F&B unicorn in Southeast Asia.
Kopi Kenangan’s Expansion
Our first outlet was established in Standard Chartered Tower in the Kuningan district (Indonesia). We have successfully expanded to more than 850 outlets in 64 cities in Indonesia in less than 5 years.
Our expansion beyond Indonesia starts with Malaysia and we will be operating as Kenangan Coffee, which we will use as our brand name outside of Indonesia and internationally. We have retained our emphasis on the word ‘Kenangan’ as it aptly translates to ‘making memories’. We will be opening 4 more stores at MyTown Cheras, Pavilion KL, NU Sentral KL, and Sunway Pyramid PJ by the end of this year. We have also launched our Training Academy in Uptown, PJ to provide various training programs for our baristas and employees.
Kopi Kenangan’s Products
Besides coffee drinks, we have also extended our products into the food category with Cerita Roti (bread), Kenangan Manis (Cookies), Chigo (Fried chicken), and Kopi Kenangan Hanya Untukmu (ready-to-drink coffee)
Kopi Kenangan’s Mobile App
We have a proprietary Kenangan app, which provides an omnichannel customer experience and engagement. Customers can collect Kenangan Points through in-app purchases or scan the QR code at the cashier to enjoy exclusive membership deals like free vouchers, birthday drinks, priority access to new products, and more.
On our end, we use this app and other technologies to better understand changing consumer preferences, so that we can provide the best products and experience for our customers.
Kopi Kenangan’s Approach to Sustainability
As we become a major player in this new-age economy, we believe that sustainability is a key part of doing business, and this has to be balanced with considerations for all our stakeholders. We pride ourselves in sustainable efforts with our robust back-end system, such as allowing neighboring branches to share resources to minimize wastage.
We partnered with like-minded organizations. To state an example, we collaborated with Grab and SUNterra in building our first solar panel outlet in Indonesia, to power our coffee-making through renewable energy. This collaboration is part of our transitional movement toward a more environmentally-friendly production using green energy.
