Twitter Adding “Grey” Checkmarks Alongside Paid Blue Checkmark

Twitter has announced a new, non-paid grey verification checkmark in addition to the $8 per month “blue checkmark”. The blue checkmark will soon be available to everyone with Twitter Blue.

Esther Crawford confirmed that this new “official” badge will replace the current blue checkmark. Before this, the function of the blue checkmark is to denote whether an account was official or of public interest.

It seems that not all profiles marked with a blue checkmark will be upgraded to “official.” In addition, this new label seems to perform what the blue checkmark does now, before the latter becomes a premium service.

This new “official” badge will be given to accounts belonging to “government agencies, commercial enterprises, business partners, significant media organisations, publishers, and select public personalities.”

Twitter Blue costs $8 per month and grants subscribers a blue checkmark. Not only that, they will also have access to certain services only avalaible to them.

Twitter Blue users get preferential treatment in responses, mentions, and searches. Moreover, they can also publish longer audio and video with fewer ads.

Initially there were reports of a $20 monthly fee for the blue mark after Elon Musk’s successfully closed the $44 billion bid to take up Twitter. Musk defended the charge on the platform and later revealed that the monthly price will be $8.
