Types Of Skincare Ingredients That Pregnant Women Must Avoid

During pregnancy, a woman’s skin may experience a variety of changes. For instance, hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, and dryness.

There is a low probability that a skincare routine would require considerable adjustments once a woman is pregnant. However, pregnant women should avoid some ingredients found in their skincare products.

Ingredients to avoid during pregnancy

Avoid retinoids retinol or any derivatives of Vitamin A. Retinoids are mostly found in anti-aging skincare, so don’t forget to check the ingredients before you use them.

Pregnant women should avoid retinoid medicines during pregnancy due to the risk of fetal retinoid syndrome and other birth defects.

It is a beta hydroxy that goes by the name salicylic acid (BHA). This ingredient is frequently found in facial care products such as cleansers, toners and exfoliants.

It can cause salicylism, which is ringing in the ears, dizziness, and vomiting.

5. Phthalates

There is evidence that phthalates can disrupt hormone function. Children and adults should avoid these substances whenever possible. It’s also harmful to fetuses.

Phthalates can cause:

  • preterm birth
  • preeclampsia
  • maternal glucose disorders
  • infant cryptorchidism, which is when the testicles are not in the correct position
  • infant hypospadias, which is when the urethra is not in the correct position in the penis
  • a shortened distance between the anus and genitals in newborns
  • growth restrictions

All in all, pregnant mothers should be very careful while selecting skincare products. Always read the product’s label before applying it to your skin.
