A 65-Year-Old ‘Ah Ma’ Becomes A Professional League of Legends (LoL) Player!

Who would’ve thought a grandmother of age 65 would be playing her first official tournament as a professional gamer? When possible, other grandmas her age would relax at home and do different things, but Chiang Yi Shu from Taiwan had something else in mind.

Surprisingly, she has a whole squad of gamers aged from 62 to 69 years old called Hungkuang Evergreen Gaming! The founder, Huang Jianji, is the director of the department of multimedia game development and application at Hungkuang University.

Chiang didn’t know much about computers before

According to CNA, Chiang had little knowledge of computers. She never thought of learning because she prefers authentic, one-to-one interactions with people.

After she started playing, Chiang noticed it was good for the brain. As online games these days are very mind-challenging, players have to come up with competent strategies to navigate their team to victory.

Chiang added, “And especially the use of hands [in the game], you need to have dexterity.”

She diligently practised at home and university

She practised at home and the university when she was free. Ego Hsu, Chiang’s coach, stated she played about five hours every week. It was to prepare for her first tournament on 17 December.

Additionally, Hsu said her approach to the game differed while coaching the elderlies.

Hsu explained,” When they play a game, I will make them enjoy it instead of killing their characters all the time.”

Even though the Hungkuang Evergreen Gaming team didn’t win the tournament, it was an experience Chiang and her teammates could never forget.

Not everyone can grasp the essence of online games— yet be good at it. We humbly congratulate Chiang and her friends for gaining new knowledge, a lifetime experience and becoming professional gamers!
