Mechamato and BoboiBoy are one of Malaysia’s greatest animation phenomena. While Boboiboy grossed around RM27.7 million in 26 days of showtime in 2019, Mechamato accumulated RM22 million in 15 days (as of 24 December).
The mastermind behind these masterpieces is no other than the animation studio Monsta. They have been striving to create interesting, fun, yet educational animation series that cater not only for children but adults in Malaysia!
Monsta makes their own cinematic universe
If you’re a fan of Marvel, DC, or any K-pop lore, you’ll be familiar with the term ‘universe’. But if you’re confused as to what it means: it’s when characters from various shows exist in the same world but at different times.
Additionally, the cinematic universe has been a go-to element many screenwriters, filmmakers and developers are incorporating into their art.
For example, Marvel has their own Marvel Cinematic Universe, where a series of Marvel superheroes co-exists in the same timeline.
Therefore, it makes sense when Monsta also includes this aspect in two of their movies, Mechamato and Boboiboy.

What do you see?
There are glimpses of Maskmana’s creations inspired by Malaysia’s traditional games, like congkak and wau in Mechamato. If you’ve watched the movie, you will know that Maskmana is a team of three and not only a person.
Then, in Boboiboy, you can see a similar wau and congkak-shaped spacecraft!
As many have speculated, Boboiboy originates from Mechamato, and everything we see in Boboiboy is in the future timeline of Mechamato! Woah! Isn’t that mind-blowing?
So, we can safely conclude that these movies coexist in the same universe but with different timelines!
Fans are surprised upon discovering this fact
Many fans are in awe that the cinematic universe theme existed in both of Monsta’s animations. Some didn’t even notice it!
Also, many are making their theory about both films (and we are ready to learn from them).
