It has been years since Jack Ma has been ‘missing’ from the public. One of the richest businessmen in the world, the founder of the Alibaba Group angered the Chinese authorities with his speech which criticized China’s financial regulatory system. Since then, he has been slowly disappearing from the public’s eyes.
According to Mothership, borrowing from Financial Times, Ma is spotted in central Tokyo. He has been living there for the last six months alongside his family. The report stated that he was spotted at exclusive private members’ clubs — a social hub for wealthy Chinese residing in Tokyo.
There are many speculations about his whereabouts during his hiatus from the public. In July this year, Wageningen University And Research announced the welcoming of Ma to the university through its website. The purpose of his visit was to learn about sustainable food production.
Living in Tokyo, Ma does not just stay there. He also makes regular trips to the United States, and tec-hub Israel, while keeping a low profile.
His Twitter account which used to be active stopped operating in late 2020. Due to the controversy that Ma had caused during his speech before, he went from an icon of China’s success to someone who is ignored.
