“Not Everything Needs Cheese”, Malaysians Fume Over Additional Topping On Traditional Dishes

We can’t deny that cheese is really delicious, especially if it’s on pizza or spaghetti. There are many dishes these days that use lots of this salty-savoury ingredient. Western dishes and Asian cuisines also use them to elevate the flavour even more.

However, let’s be real: not every menu needs cheese.

Can you imagine the already-delicious nasi lemak has cheese as the topping? How would sambal sotong and cheese taste together?

Maybe it’ll taste good, but we doubt it’ll be phenomenal.

Since nasi lemak is already tasty, why ruin the taste?

Why must there be cheese on everything?

There’s an ongoing discussion on Twitter about the relevance of a cheesy component in many traditional menus.

Paul Tan (@paultantk) broke a piece of shocking news: pani puri now comes with cheese ‘leleh’. Not everyone is happy with the news.

Generally, many aren’t okay with the additional cheesy topping on traditional foods like these.

Some even question the future of Malaysia’s food industry. Will food vendors put it when it isn’t necessary?

A tweet from nora (@dyoguma) sparks fears in many. What will happen if it becomes a reality?

It already is!

Malaysians disagree with the cheesy addition to every dish

Although it sounds like an exaggeration, Malaysians are very proud of their traditional cuisines. But knowing the ingredient is everywhere now: our reputation as a food haven might be in ruins.

Cheese is an ingredient that can lift the taste of a dish to another level. It might suit Western menus more than Asians, though, especially in Malaysia.

We hope Malaysian food innovators will take the ‘put cheese on everything’ into consideration. Don’t all things need to be done in moderation?

We don’t know how to react if nasi kerabu or mee goreng mamak cheese will be a thing of the future.
