Pretty Privilege In Real Life And Social Media, This Is What It Actually Means

Nowadays, people are so absorbed in the idea of being pretty. No, it is not wrong. However, the idea of unrealistic beauty standards has been taken too far. On TikTok or Snapchat, to take a few examples, filters are created to make us look like we have high cheekbones, plump lips, and clear skin. Just know this peeps. You are beautiful just the way you are.

Have you heard of ‘pretty privilege?’ The term has been all over the internet these days. It is associated with people who are more attractive to benefit from advantages. Aside from that, they also are provided with more opportunities that are not awarded to less attractive people.

So, is pretty privilege a real thing?

According to the National Library of Medicine, “attractive people show greater acquisition of resources and greater reproductive success than other.”

Another study shows that attractive people were deemed more trustworthy than less attractive people.

Even the actress, Rebel Wilson, admits the ‘realness’ of pretty privilege. As we all know, the 43-year-old actress has gone through an impressive weight loss. Cited from L’officiel Singapore, Wilson opened up in an interview that people were treating her differently after her weight loss.

“After reaching her goal of 165 pounds (about 75kg), Wilson noticed that people would “offer to carry [her] groceries” or “hold doors open for [her]”.

People had never done that to Wilson before her weight loss journey.

Yup, pretty privilege is real. Both men and women can get that privilege.

But, what can we do about it?

  • Stop comparing yourself with others
  • Untrain the bias we have toward attractive people
  • Be comfortable in your own skin
