Your Child’s First Day Of School? Here’s What Parents Should Know

Starting from this Sunday, the 19th of March, schools are reopening. So exciting! But, it may not be as exciting for first time schoolers. They are about to start a new chapter in a new place with new people. First-timers may be pre-schoolers, standard one students, form one students, or those who switch to a new school!

Often, newcomers will feel scared and nervous to enter a new place. No worries. We understand this feeling. We were once newcomers too at school!

Here’s what parents should know and do to help their child overcome the feelings of being anxious and scared when entering a new place:

1) Comfort them

  • Tell them that their feelings are valid.
  • Assure them that everything is going to be okay.

2) Be positive

  • Seeing your child feeling anxious, it is time for you to cheer them up.
  • Give them encouragement!
  • Do not compare your child with others who might seem to enjoy their first day at school.

3) Let them have a good night’s sleep before the big day

  • Make sure for your child to sleep early.
  • Having a lack of sleep will make someone tired and tiredness can make the anxious feeling worse!

Remember, a child’s number one supporter should be the parents! Thus, let them know that you are always there for them!
