Low Yat Group’s The RiverCity Partners with Animal Kindness Coalition to Advocate for Humane Stray Management and Celebrate Pet-Friendly Urban Living at Pawsitive Fiesta

As Greater Kuala Lumpur’s population continues to surge, now estimated to be at over 8.8 million people, the challenges of urban living are becoming increasingly complex. Among these is the need for responsible and humane management of stray animals, a pressing issue in many rapidly expanding urban areas. The RiverCity, under the stewardship of Low Yat Group, is leading the charge in addressing these challenges through a comprehensive placemaking strategy that promotes a pet-friendly lifestyle, culminating in the upcoming Pawsitive Fiesta.

Pawsitive Fiesta, scheduled for 17th and 18th August 2024 at The RiverCity, Jalan Ipoh, is more than just a community event—it’s a significant step towards raising awareness about humane stray management and responsible pet ownership. Organised in collaboration with the Animal Kindness Coalition (AKC) and other key partners, this event is a platform to educate and engage the public on the importance of humane methods like Trap-Neuter-Return-Manage (TNRM) in controlling stray populations.

The RiverCity: A Hub for Urban Pet Living

The RiverCity is more than just a lifestyle hub; it represents a thoughtful approach to urban development in Kuala Lumpur. Managed by Low Yat Group, The RiverCity is undergoing significant asset enhancements to become a pet-friendly destination, integrating more pet-centric amenities and attracting businesses that cater to pet owners. This transformation reflects a broader trend in urban living where pets are increasingly seen as integral to community life, contributing to the vibrancy and inclusivity of urban spaces.

Chan Wai Yee, Senior Marketing Manager at The RiverCity, emphasizes the importance of inclusive design in creating vibrant communities: “A truly vibrant community is one where every space is designed with care, not just for people, but for their furry companions too. In placemaking, the most welcoming places are those that embrace both human and animal footprints.”

Embracing Humane Stray Management

Traditional methods of stray control, such as catch and kill, are increasingly viewed as inhumane and ineffective. Penang’s successful implementation of the TNRM program marks a significant shift towards more compassionate and sustainable practices. This approach, supported by animal welfare advocates and local governments, is central to AKC’s mission of creating a stray-free Selangor, serving as a model for humane stray management across the region.

“At Animal Kindness Coalition, we believe in treating all animals with the kindness and respect they deserve. Our approach to managing stray populations through TNRM—trap, neuter with vaccination, release, and manage—is about more than just control; it’s about giving these animals a better life. We’re also committed to helping people understand the importance of responsible pet ownership because it’s something that affects our entire community. As a relatively new NGO, we’ve made significant strides since our founding in July 2023, and we’re excited to continue our work through initiatives like Pawsitive Fiesta. This event is not just a celebration of pets but an important platform for educating the public on compassionate stray management and responsible pet care,” said Asther Lau, President and Co-Founder of Animal Kindness Coalition.

AKC’s commitment to TNRM, coupled with its emphasis on responsible pet ownership, directly addresses the root causes of stray overpopulation. Pawsitive Fiesta will highlight these efforts, offering attendees a chance to learn about these humane practices through various activities, demonstrations, and expert talks.

Pawsitive Fiesta: A Gathering for Urban Pet Enthusiasts

Pawsitive Fiesta will bring together pet owners, local communities, and stakeholders to explore the evolving landscape of urban pet living. Among the key features of the event is the launch of the Pet Trail at The RiverCity. This newly developed trail offers a safe, welcoming space for pets and their owners, and also serves as a community walking path. Upon completion of the second phase along Sungai Batu, the trail will extend to approximately 2 kilometres, further underscoring The RiverCity’s commitment to enhancing pet-friendly environments in urban settings.

This community event is part of AKC’s Responsible Pet Ownership awareness project. AKC strives for a holistic approach that includes participation from the government, private sectors, animal lovers, and the general public. Through such collaboration, Pawsitive Fiesta aims to foster a culture of compassion and responsibility in the care of pets and the management of stray populations.

The event will feature a range of activities aimed at engaging the community and promoting responsible pet ownership. This includes a fashion show where pets and their owners can participate, as well as an adoption drive in collaboration with Second Chance Animal Society, providing an opportunity for attendees to offer a home to animals in need.

Additionally, a demonstration by the Police K9 Unit will highlight the critical role that trained animals play in public safety. Professional trainers and groomers will also be present to provide insights into effective pet care practices, complemented by on-site veterinarians who will offer health consultations and essential services like vaccinations.

Visitors can further explore a curated marketplace, showcasing a variety of products and services catering to both pets and their owners. A dedicated photography booth will also be available, offering a chance to capture memorable moments with pets.

Promoting a Pet-Friendly Urban Environment

The importance of pets in urban settings is increasingly recognised by property developers and businesses. Initiatives aimed at creating more green spaces, pet-friendly housing, and dedicated areas for pets to play and socialise are on the rise. These efforts contribute to a more inclusive and dynamic city life, fostering environments where pets are seen as integral members of the community.
