MILO-MSSM 2024: Celebrating Young Talent & Record-Breaking Achievements in Malaysian Sports

The MOE-MSSM-MILO 2024, held from 23 May to 25 October 2024, brought together the best of Malaysia’s young student athletes in a showcase of determination, camaraderie, and perseverance, concluding with 18 new records set in athletics alone of which has just wrapped up in Ipoh, Perak this week.

MILO, known as pioneers in the Malaysian sports scene, has also been a steadfast supporter of Majlis Sukan Sekolah Sekolah Malaysia (MSSM) for over 60 years, ever since the inception of the championships, collaborating with the Ministry of Education to promote and accelerate sports at the grassroots level, aligned with their mantra “sports are a great teacher”. As Malaysia’s most prestigious school sports meet, the outstanding performances proves that this platform paves the road to gold – nurturing a future of champions, from school level itself. Through the values that sport embodies—discipline, teamwork, respect, and leadership—MILO believes that every child can build a strong foundation for success in both sports and life.

This year, over 12,900 student athletes representing 16 contingents competed across 24 sports, showcasing their utmost talent. The championship, which began in May with Cross Country in Putrajaya, hosted events in Penang, Johor, Kuala Lumpur, and Selangor, with the final event being Athletics held at Stadium Perak, Ipoh.

“For these young athletes, MSSM is about more than winning medals. It provides an opportunity to build friendship, nurture fellowship and experience the joy of competing and learning from peers from across the nation. The memories and experiences gained through MSSM are cherished, as athletes not only hone their skills but also grow in character. MILO strongly believes sports teaches us many life lessons, from finding courage over fear to building self-belief and working together as a team,” said Lim Kerwin, Head of Sports Marketing of MILO® Malaysia. “We are proud to continue our collaboration with the Ministry of Education to ensure that the MSSM remains an integral part of nurturing the next generation of champions.”

Sabah, emerging as the overall champions for MSSM athletics this year winning 23 gold medals. In another standout performance, Penangite Muhammad Sayyid Amin Roslan successfully broke the U-18 200m twice, clocking 21.42 seconds in the semi-finals, surpassing the old record of 21.59, and again in the finals with 20.94 seconds.

Many of Malaysia’s top athletes, who have gone on to excel at national and world-renowned meets such as SUKMA, SEA Games, Asian Games and even the Olympics, started their journey with MSSM. Rafiq Ismail, Asia’s top-ranked tenpin bowler and MOE-MSSM-MILO Award recipient, reflected on his journey, stating, “MSSM was a stepping stone for me. I learned that there are no shortcuts to success; every small effort adds up to your overall achievement.
