Inaugural Malaysia-Singapore Cross-Border Renewable Energy Trade Set To Begin In December 2024

The first phase of Cross-border Renewable Energy (RE) trading from Malaysia to Singapore with a total capacity of 50MW is set to commence in December 2024. A signing ceremony for the Renewable Energy Supply Agreement (RESA) between Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Sembcorp Power Pte Ltd (Sembcorp Power), was held today at the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), witnessed by representatives from both governments.

This pioneering supply of green electricity from Malaysia to Singapore follows a bidding process conducted by the government through Energy Exchange Malaysia (ENEGEM) in June 2024. The ENEGEM enables the purchase and delivery of green electricity from Malaysia’s power supply system to Singapore through a competitive auction process. TNB, as the national utility company, will supply the electricity to Singapore through Sembcorp Power utilising the existing interconnection network between the two countries.

The auction via ENEGEM forms part of PETRA’s initiative under the Cross- Border Electricity Sales for Renewable Energy Scheme (CBES RE). This scheme will be rolled out in phases, utilising the existing interconnection network between Malaysia and Singapore, with a total capacity of 300MW.

The implementation of CBES RE aligns with Malaysia’s energy transition aspirations and its commitment to advancing regional electricity supply integration through the ASEAN Power Grid, which will be among the key priorities for Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025.
