Ejen Ali: The Movie Review, A Next-Level Win for Malaysian Animation

Ejen Ali: The Movie 2 isn’t just a sequel, it’s a bold upgrade that proves Malaysian animation can stand tall on the global stage. Following the success of the first film in 2019, the second installment brings higher stakes, stunning animation, and a deeper storyline that cements Ejen Ali as a true icon in local pop culture.

More Than Just a Spy Kid Story

This time, Ali isn’t just learning the ropes, he’s mastering the full set of MATA’s Teras powers with a powerful new Satria suit. The animation is sharper, the fight scenes more intense, and the emotional beats hit harder. Even small details, like the textures in Ali’s new look, show how much effort WAU Animation put into elevating the visuals.

From the first raindrop in the opening scene, you know you’re in for a ride. WAU Animation flexes its creative muscles here, cinematography, lighting, and motion are all top-tier. Every action sequence is polished, dynamic, and emotionally charged.

The new S.A.T.R.I.A. suit is a fan favorite, blending high-tech with subtle Malaysian design. Each of its four Teras powers offers thrilling moments, giving Ali more room to grow and audiences more reasons to cheer. It’s not just cool, it’s cultural.

This sequel feels more refined and mature, without losing the charm that made the first movie a hit with kids and adults alike.

While some emotional scenes land beautifully, others feel a bit rushed, especially compared to Ejen Ali: The Movie 1, where emotional beats like “Kita Jaga Kita” hit unexpectedly and memorably.

The new villain is mysterious, but lacks the emotional depth that made Niki such a standout in the first film. Still, the plot twist toward the end, plus the two mid- and post-credit scenes, tease exciting possibilities for the franchise.

Box Office Power Move

In case you’re wondering if the hype is real, yes, it is. Ejen Ali: The Movie 2 has officially crossed RM40.6 million at the Malaysian box office, making it one of the top 10 highest-grossing local films of all time. It even outperformed the first film, which collected RM32.5 million back in 2019.

For me, EATM2 is a technical and cultural triumph. While it doesn’t always match the emotional highs of its predecessor, it still delivers on action, visuals, and fan service. For Malaysians who grew up with Usop Sontorian and Keluang Man, this isn’t just a movie, it’s a moment. One that proves Malaysian animation has not only caught up but is leading in its own lane.

For young Malaysians, seeing a local hero on the big screen (in a super suit, no less) is inspiring. For the rest of the world, it’s a message: Malaysia is ready to play big in the animation game.
