Don’t Own a House? Tenants Can Still Enjoy Lower Electricity Bills with ToU

Starting 1 July 2025, Malaysia rolled out a new electricity pricing system called Time-of-Use (ToU), where electricity costs depend on when you use it. Yup, that late-night laundry might actually save you money now.

But here’s the catch, if you’re a tenant, you don’t always have control over your electricity account. So how do you join this money-saving scheme without owning the property? Let’s break it down.

What Is Time-of-Use (ToU) Anyway?

Basically, TNB now charges different rates based on the time you use electricity:

What Is Time-of-Use (ToU) Anyway?

Basically, TNB now charges different rates based on the time you use electricity:

Time Rate Type
2pm–10pm (Weekdays) 🟥 Peak (Expensive)
10pm–2pm (Next Day) 🟩 Off-Peak (Cheaper!)
Weekends + Public Holidays 🟩 Off-Peak All Day

So if you time your chores, Netflix binges, and EV charging smartly, you’ll pay less, especially during Off-Peak hours.

Why Tenants Should Care

Because this change affects your monthly electricity bill, not your landlord’s. And if your rental unit has a smart meter, you’re already halfway to cheaper energy if you can activate ToU.

So… Can Tenants Apply for ToU?

Here’s the real talk:

If the TNB account is in your name:
You’re golden. Just:

  • Log in to myTNB or open the app
  • Find “Tariff Switch” or “Time-of-Use (ToU) Application”
  • Apply and wait a few days
  • Start shifting your power usage and watch your bill drop

If the TNB account is in your landlord’s name:
You can’t apply directly. But you’ve got options:

1. Ask your landlord to activate ToU

Send a polite message like:

“Hi, I noticed TNB’s new Time-of-Use scheme helps reduce electricity bills by shifting usage to off-peak hours. Could you help activate it via myTNB? I’m happy to guide the process!”

It’s free to activate, so there’s no harm in asking.

2. Transfer the TNB account to your name

If you’re renting long-term, you can request to transfer the account to yourself. Just:

  • Visit a TNB branch
  • Bring your IC and tenancy agreement
  • Pay a small deposit + stamp duty
  • Once it’s in your name, you can control the account and activate ToU.

Don’t Have a Smart Meter?

ToU only works if you have a smart meter. You can:

    • Check via myTNB app (under account details)

    • Request one through TNB (installation is usually free)

How To Max Your Savings (Even As a Tenant)

Tip Why It Helps
Run laundry after 10pm Uses cheaper Off-Peak electricity
Charge devices overnight Same as above
Avoid AC & heavy appliances 2–10pm Peak time = higher rates
Use timers/schedulers Let your tech work while you sleep
Monitor bills on myTNB Stay in the 600–1000kWh range for rebates

Bonus Perks: Rebates & Savings

  • Use ≤600kWh? You skip the RM10 retail charge
  • Use ≤1000kWh? You get rebates up to 25 sen/kWh
  • Weekends & holidays = All Off-Peak, all day. Do all your chores then

In a time where every ringgit counts, learning how to time your electricity usage isn’t just smart, it’s essential. Whether you’re streaming, doing laundry, or charging your devices, shifting habits to off-peak hours can lead to real savings.

So, don’t wait check your TNB account, talk to your landlord, and start powering up smarter.
