‘negaraku II’ Unpacks the Real Malaysian Experience Through Art

What does it really mean to call yourself Malaysian?

That’s the question at the heart of Negaraku II, an art exhibition happening this August at the ever-vibrant Hin Bus Depot, George Town. After the success of the first Negaraku last year, this second edition dives even deeper exploring identity, belonging, and the many untold stories that shape Malaysia today.

60 Artworks. Countless Stories

Curated by Ivan Gabriel and produced by Hin Bus Depot, Negaraku II showcases around 35 curated works, including thematic sets, bringing the total to nearly 60 powerful pieces.

The exhibition features selections from the private collections of Bingley Sim and Ima Norbinsha, both long-time champions of Malaysian contemporary art. Their collections are raw, real, and unapologetically Malaysian reflecting decades of dedication to works that don’t just celebrate Malaysia, but challenge us to confront its complexities.

A National Story Told in Chapters

This year’s show is arranged in thematic chapters or bab touching on themes like pride, migration, food, and shared dreams.

“Negaraku II is a call to re-examine what it means to belong,” says curator Ivan Gabriel.

“It’s about honouring every face and every untold story that breathes life into this land.”

And it’s not just about citizens this exhibition also highlights the voices of migrants, minorities, and those in between. Because the truth is, Malaysia’s story isn’t one note. It’s a chorus.

“Rakyat Hidup, Bersatu dan Maju”

That’s the theme this year.

“In every piece, you’ll find glimpses of everyday harmony — a shared meal, a neighbour’s kindness, or the resilience of those who now call this place home,” says collector Bingley Sim.

“Unity isn’t about being the same. It’s about choosing to see and support each other.”

It’s a reminder that national identity isn’t static, it’s always evolving.

This year’s edition also includes:

  • New artworks by selected Malaysian artists
  • Multilingual guided tours (English, BM, Mandarin, Sign Language)
  • Live food demos yes, real-time Roti Jala and Nasi Ulam action

Because art isn’t just about what you see it’s also what you taste, feel, and share.
