Haze Blankets India’s Capital Right in the Middle of Festival Season

The air quality index in New Delhi, India, was reported to worsen gradually due to the dense toxic smog lingering in the skyline.

It is believed that air pollution has increased rapidly due to the uncontrolled emission of poisonous gases. The setting off of fireworks during the Deepavali celebration on Sunday night might be the major contributor to air pollution in metropolitan areas in India.

Recently, the Supreme Court of India showed leniency to launch the ‘green firework’ to celebrate the upcoming Festival of Lights. This move aims to preserve the festive spirit while minimizing harm to air quality. Unfortunately, this approach is often overlooked by the public.

According to IQAir, air pollution levels in India’s metropolitan areas have reached PM2.5 concentrations as high as 248 micrograms per cubic metre. Furthermore, the Government Air Quality Management Commission stated that the poor air quality may continue in the days ahead.

Therefore, the microscopic cancer-causing particles can be absorbed into the bloodstream, leading to severe health issues. For instance, the respiratory system issues include coughing, nasal congestion, and difficulty breathing.

Cloud Seeding Initiatives to Combat Hazardous Haze in India

The authorities are working to ensure that the electricity supply remains sufficient, thereby reducing reliance on diesel fuel.

The government has also implemented cloud seeding as a measure to remove airborne toxic molecules, aiming to preserve air quality.

“We are fully equipped to carry out cloud seeding operations.” Said Environment Minister of Delhi, Manjinder Singh Sirsa.

According to The Lancet Planetary Health, air pollution contributed approximately 3.8 million deaths over the decade from 2009 to 2019.

Based on the UN children’s agency (UNICEF), children exposed to unhealthy air for extended periods may face a higher risk of acute respiratory infections.
