From Forgotten Alleys to Vibrant Urban Spaces: DBKL’s Backlane Revival

Who would’ve thought that the backstreets of Kuala Lumpur were once dark, messy, and slightly intimidating?

Today, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has transformed into lively, stylish, cultural, a sense of safety, and welcoming pedestrian spaces.

From Dark Alleys to Instagram-Worthy Lanes

Through the ‘Pengaktifan, Penyambungan, and Pemulihan Lorong-Lorong Belakang’ initiative, these neglected streets are stepping into the spotlight.

Inspired by the success of Jalan Alor in Bukit Bintang, this holistic approach doesn’t just upgrade the look. It also elevates the quality of urban life by tackling social and safety challenges head-on.

Key locations like Lorong Bandar 13, Lorong Sisi Jalan Yap Ah Loy, and Lorong Petaling (Pasar Karat), all rich in history and identity are getting a major glow-up.

Durable cobblestone pathways, colourful murals on the walls and floors, and thoughtful urban design now make these lanes inviting. And walking through these streets no longer sparks hesitation; it feels safe, fun, and Instagram-worthy.

Safety, Community, and Local Vibes at the Core

Safety and cleanliness are a top priority too.

DBKL installed bright streetlights, CCTV coverage, and upgraded drainage systems to meticulously plan every detail and create pedestrian-friendly spaces.

DBKL has turned what was considered a ‘backdoor alley’ into a proud, functional corridor of the city.

But the transformation isn’t just about looks. DBKL aligns this project with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to ensure the city’s revival benefits the community.

At Lorong Bandar 21, near Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, flower vendors now have designated spaces, while small traders in Lorong Petaling can earn a living in a cheerful, organised environment.

It’s a physical makeover that empowers local businesses and brings communities back to life.

DBKL didn’t do it alone. Shop owners, residents, and partners like Think City actively participated from planning to maintenance, proving that when the community gets involved, they not only create beautiful spaces but also cherish and preserve them.

Every cobblestone laid, every light installed, and every mural painted tells the story of a city that listens, observes, and acts for its people.

The transformation has turned the backstreets of Kuala Lumpur from forgotten spaces into vivid symbols of hope, pride, and urban creativity.

So next time you stroll through these revamped alleys, pause, take it all in, and maybe snap a few shots.

Because Kuala Lumpur has turned its backstreets from hidden corners into the city’s colourful and thriving heartbeat.
