From Dispatch Boy to Bus Boss, Man Turned Struggles into a Fleet Empire

From Dispatch Boy to Bus Boss, Man Turned Struggles into a Fleet Empire

Success stories often start in unexpected places. For Malaysian entrepreneur Ahmad Zaim Ghazali, the journey didn’t begin in a boardroom or with a big investment.

It began on the streets, delivering letters and chasing opportunities wherever he could find them.

Today, Zaim is the founder of Zaim Express, an express bus company gradually carving its name into Malaysia’s transportation industry.

But behind the growing fleet lies a story shaped by resilience, grit, and the kind of determination that refuses to quit.

Hardship Became His Motivation From A Dispatch Boy

Zaim’s life changed early. He lost his mother when he was just four years old and his father at the age of 17. Instead of letting hardship break him, he used it as fuel to keep moving forward.

Even during his school days, he looked for ways to earn money. Zaim sold burgers by the roadside and constantly explored small hustles to support himself.

Later, while studying at Universiti Utara Malaysia, he continued experimenting with business ideas, including car rentals and property ventures.

It was during his industrial training that he first imagined owning an express bus company. At the time, the dream seemed simple, but the reality would prove far more challenging.

The Unexpected Job That Built His Character

After graduating, Zaim faced a major hurdle: capital.

Starting an express bus company requires massive investment, with a single bus costing between RM500,000 and RM1 million.

While waiting for his operating license; a process that took five long years from 2013 to 2018, Zaim worked various jobs just to keep going. One of them was as a dispatch boy runner, a job that pushed him physically and mentally.

Instead of seeing it as a setback, Zaim treated it as training for life. The job exposed him to different people and opened doors to new networks, including government officers and entrepreneurs who would later support his journey.

One Bus, One Bold Move

Even after finally securing his license, another obstacle appeared, banks were reluctant to approve loans for his new company.

So Zaim took a leap of faith. He gathered every bit of savings he had and purchased a second-hand bus with cash. In 2020, Zaim Express officially began operations with just one bus.

Then the pandemic hit.

The transport industry came to a halt as travel restrictions swept across the country. Many businesses struggled to survive. Yet Zaim refused to give up on the dream he had spent years building.

Slowly but surely, the company weathered the storm.

From One Bus to Bigger Ambitions

Today, Zaim Express operates multiple buses and employs around 30 staff members, connecting passengers between the Klang Valley and the East Coast.

But Zaim is far from finished.

He hopes to expand routes across Peninsular Malaysia and eventually reach neighbouring countries like Singapore and Thailand. His long-term vision is ambitious, a fleet of 100 to 150 buses by 2035.

Behind the scenes, his wife, a lawyer; plays a key role in supporting the company’s operations and legal matters.

Proof That Every Journey Starts Somewhere

Zaim’s story reminds us that success rarely follows a straight road.

Sometimes it begins with the smallest steps; selling burgers, delivering letters, or simply refusing to give up when things get difficult.

Because for Zaim, those early struggles didn’t slow him down.

They prepared him for the journey ahead.
