McDonald’s Malaysia and TNB Are Bringing Solar Power and EV Charging to More Restaurants

The fast-food giant and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) are strengthening their partnership to bring cleaner energy and green mobility closer to Malaysians through rooftop solar, renewable electricity and EV charging.

The collaboration was recently marked in Penang with the signing of a new solar agreement, the presentation of McDonald’s GET certificate and the launch of a TNB Electron EV charging facility at McDonald’s Batu Kawan Drive-Thru.

More McDonald’s Restaurants Are Going Solar
Under the latest phase, rooftop solar systems will be installed at 51 additional McDonald’s restaurants, with a combined estimated capacity of 1.685 MWp.

The systems will be developed and maintained by GSPARX, a TNB subsidiary, with implementation expected to run from 2026 to 2027.

This builds on their 2023 partnership, which already covered 100 selected McDonald’s Drive-Thru restaurants.

McDonald’s will also subscribe to TNB’s Green Electricity Tariff (GET) for up to 285 restaurants or electricity accounts, making it the first and largest quick-service restaurant company in Malaysia to subscribe to GET.

EV Charging While You Grab Your McD
Meanwhile, EV drivers now have another place to charge up.
The TNB Electron facility at McDonald’s Batu Kawan Drive-Thru is the first TNB Electron location in Malaysia’s food and beverage sector.

It features a 200kW DC fast charger with two charging points, expandable to four, and operates 24/7.

So while your EV charges, you can grab a meal, take a break or simply continue your journey afterwards.

More TNB Electron charging facilities are also planned at selected McDonald’s restaurants nationwide.

The partnership supports Malaysia’s wider push towards cleaner energy under initiatives including the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

In short: more solar, more renewable electricity and more EV charging all in places Malaysians already visit every day.
