Malaysia’s diverse cultural scene came together under one roof as Ombak KLCC celebrated the nation’s 69th year of independence with Jiwa Merdeka, a four-day celebration of art, heritage, music, food and community.
Held from August 28 to 31, the celebration featured 69 activations across Ombak KLCC, bringing together different sides of Malaysian culture while showing how tradition continues to evolve with the times.
From batik and songket making their way onto modern runways to wayang kulit being reimagined for younger audiences, Jiwa Merdeka explored the many ways Malaysian culture has found a place in contemporary life.
A little bit of Malaysia, all in one place
Throughout the four-day celebration, visitors experienced different cultural traditions across Ombak KLCC.
Street graffiti took over one side of the concourse while Chinese yo-yo performers entertained crowds nearby.
Elsewhere, Borneo dance performances shared the spotlight with bhangra, creating a colourful mix of cultures in one space.
The Jiwa Merdeka Immersive Experience also brought three of Kuala Lumpur’s cultural neighbourhoods indoors.
Visitors could try saree tying, kolam and garland making at Little India, while Chinatown featured Chinese drums, oriental fan making, calligraphy and ink painting.
Kampung Baru offered a more nostalgic experience with songket weaving, batik canting, congkak and batu seremban, giving some visitors a chance to revisit childhood favourites while introducing others to traditional Malaysian crafts and games for the first time.
Music took centre stage
The celebration also featured a line-up of some of Malaysia’s most recognisable music acts.
Datuk Sheila Majid opened the festivities, followed by performances from Yuna, Dayang Nurfaizah, Reshmonu, Atilia, Vince Chong and DJ Santan throughout the weekend.
Beyond music and cultural showcases, Pesta Kopi Merdeka took over the Rooftop Garden, while Pasar Seloka at the Concourse Level gave Malaysian artisans and craftsmen a platform to showcase their work.
The celebrations continued at KLCC Park on August 30, where Semarak Jiwa Merdeka di KLCC brought together music, lights and sound to mark Merdeka.
A new cultural wave in KL
Located along the eastern edge of KLCC Park and directly connected to MRT Persiaran KLCC Station, Ombak KLCC is the latest addition to the KLCC Precinct.
Spanning seven levels, the culture led lifestyle destination brings together art, dining, curated retail and lifestyle experiences, alongside a rooftop Sky Garden and open air plaza.
Its anchor tenant, Galeri PETRONAS, also gave visitors an early look at its new space at Ombak KLCC ahead of its full operations next year.
With Jiwa Merdeka, Ombak KLCC brought together the traditional and the contemporary, proving that Malaysian culture isn’t just something to look back on, but something that continues to evolve, remix and find new audiences.
