Google has announced a US$15 billion investment in Malaysia over 2027 and 2028 to expand its digital infrastructure and support local communities.
Announced on 4 November 2026 in the presence of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the investment builds on Google’s more than 15-year presence in Malaysia.
It includes new data centre campuses, clean energy projects, water conservation efforts and skills development programmes.
The company’s first data centre campus in Elmina Business Park, Selangor, is now operational. Google also plans to develop additional campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
These facilities will provide computing capacity for local digital and AI applications. They will also support Google services such as Search, Maps and Chrome across Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific region.
Supporting Local Jobs and Economic Growth
Google is working with more than 80 Malaysian entities across construction, engineering, network infrastructure and supporting services. These partnerships aim to strengthen local suppliers and create long-term economic opportunities.
Once operational, the facilities are expected to sustain more than 9,000 local jobs annually. These include specialist positions in engineering, technical operations, logistics and security. Wages are projected to average 45% above the national median.
Upskilling 800,000 Malaysians in AI and Technology
Google is introducing four programmes to equip approximately 800,000 Malaysians with new skills between 2027 and 2031. The initiatives will focus on educators, students, microentrepreneurs, civil servants and vocational jobseekers.
The programmes include:
- Experience AI Malaysia: A collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Penang Science Cluster and Raspberry Pi Foundation to improve AI literacy among educators and students aged 11 to 14.
- Jelajah AI MSME: Developed with Pepper Labs, the programme helps microentrepreneurs build digital business profiles and online storefronts. It will begin with pilot clinics in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan before expanding nationwide.
- Anjakan Kemahiran AI Demi Rakyat (AKAD Rakyat): In partnership with Arus Academy, the initiative will equip local council officers and constituency members with AI skills and productivity tools.
- Data Center Institutes (DCIs): Google plans to establish training institutes at selected polytechnics in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. Starting in 2027, the 10-week programme will prepare TVET jobseekers for data centre operations and deployment roles.
These programmes complement Google’s existing community initiatives, including Future Skills 4 All with UNICEF Malaysia and other partners, as well as Pathway to Prosperity with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research.
Strengthening Water Security and Community Resilience
Google is also expanding its water stewardship efforts to support long-term water security. Its existing collaboration with the Global Environment Centre (GEC) and Petaling Jaya City Council focuses on improving Taman Aman Lake through nature-based solutions.
Two additional water replenishment projects were announced.
The first will focus on the Sungai Buloh and Sungai Selangor river basins. Working with GEC, Google plans to introduce constructed wetlands, riverbank bioengineering and community-led pollution monitoring. These efforts aim to improve raw water quality and protect river ecosystems.
The second initiative involves establishing water resilience centres at four schools in Selangor. In collaboration with CLEAN International, Water Watch Penang and Gravity Water, Google will install rainwater harvesting systems and 20,000-litre storage tanks.
Each school will have emergency water capacity for up to 2,000 community members during municipal supply disruptions. The systems will also help reduce operating costs through harvested rainwater for non-drinking purposes.
Adding More Than 1GW of Clean Energy to Malaysia’s Grid
Google plans to bring more than 1GW of new clean energy capacity to Malaysia’s National Grid.
Working with Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the company will support new clean energy generation facilities under Malaysia’s Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme. Both parties will also explore round-the-clock clean energy projects to address the intermittent nature of renewable sources.
Google also confirmed it will pay for 100% of the electricity consumed by its data centre campuses. This includes the direct infrastructure costs required to connect them to the grid.
In 2027, the company plans to introduce community-based energy initiatives to strengthen grid resilience and help protect household electricity affordability. These efforts will include programmes to reduce electricity bills in states hosting its infrastructure.
Through its latest investment, Google aims to support Malaysia’s digital ambitions while creating opportunities across employment, education and sustainability. The initiatives also reflect its broader commitment to developing infrastructure that benefits local businesses and communities.
